Sometimes being deficient in testosterone is a symptom of being short on other vital nutrients, vitamins and minerals. There are studies that vitamin D is essential to the production of test. Before discussing that, lets review all the other important things it does for you.
How Much Do You Need?
Someone who has frequent exposure to sunlight generally has sufficient vitamin D synthesis within their own body, without the need of a supplement. Exposure to 10 minutes of sun per day in the summer is sufficient, if you have fair skin. However, as sunlight has other negative aspects associated with it, many people (rightly) try to avoid direct sunlight. In this case, a supplement is beneficial and recommended.
What Does It Do?
VitaD is vital to the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in your body. It helps to strengthen your immune system. Getting a sufficient amount is important for growth of teeth and bones, and gives you improved resistance to disease. It’s also been found that high levels can lead to a longer life. You heard that right, higher levels of V-D are associated with longer lifespans!
Vita D and Testosterone
As a bodybuilder looking for ways of naturally promoting T for better gains, this is the most important section you should be interested in. You can naturally elevate T levels. In one study, healthy but overweight men were given D in order to monitor effects. The result confirmed that it can boost T.
Mean circulating 25(OH)D concentrations increased significantly by 53.5 nmol/l in the group, but remained almost constant in the placebo group. Compared to baseline values, a significant increase in total T levels (from 10.7 ± 3.9 nmol/l to 13.4 ± 4.7 nmol/l; p < 0.001), bioactive testosterone (from 5.21 ± 1.87 nmol/l to 6.25 ± 2.01 nmol/l; p = 0.001), and free T levels (from 0.222 ± 0.080 nmol/l to 0.267 ± 0.087 nmol/l; p = 0.001) were observed in the supplemented group. By contrast, there was no significant change in any T measure in the placebo group. Our results suggest that supplementation might increase testosterone levels.
Cod Liver Oil, Foods With High Concentration
The best source for v-D is Cod Liver Oil (or CLO). A tablespoon of this (14 grams) provides 1400IU, or 233% of your recommended intake. In addition, it includes 280% of your vitamin A, and 2894mg of healthy omega-3 fats. A few other great food sources are cooked trout (one filet has 90% RDA), and Portabello mushrooms (one cup has 64% RDA). It can be difficult to supplement V-D with diet and still meet your RDA, so if you haven’t access to 10 minutes of summer sun (add time if not direct), or have darker skin, it is advisable to supplement your diet for an adequate supply of V-D.
As a Workout Supplement
Trying to get slim, toned abs? V-D will help you reduce your abdominal fat. Overweight and obese adults were put on strength training program for 3 months. A portion of the group were given 4000IU of V-D per day. That group had a much better response to the exercise, significantly boosting their strength within a month of supplementation. By the 3 month mark, their waistline had more significant reductions.

Above, I list both capsules, as well as cod liver oil. While slightly more expensive, the CLO gives you the bigger bang for the buck, because it has more than just vit-D. There was another study of the effects of CLO on damaged cartilage taken from 12 people who suffered from arthritis and had knee replacement surgery. The study found that certain enzymes caused cartilage damage, and CLO reversed the actions of the enzymes almost immediately. This plays into the known fact that CLO will reduce inflammation. Finally, CLO is full of the healthy omega 3 fatty acids.
The downside, as many know — it doesn’t taste that great! So if you feel like you can suffer taking CLO long enough to reap the benefits, go for it … otherwise, capsules of vita-D are another excellent option.
Which should you get? If you’re a body builder, get the CLO, it’s better for you, and so what if it tastes a little funky? Doing inconvenient things that aren’t so pleasant is part of the journey to getting the body you want! You push your body for hours in order to get your gains, a split second of bad taste is child’s play!
