On the previous page I discussed how Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard was at the top of my list. Following is my second choice:
Optimum Nutrition 100% Casein Protein — Chocolate Supreme
Casein is the absolute best nighttime protein you can buy. It releases itself into your bloodstream slowly so your body soaks it up overnight while you sleep. With over 600 positive reviews on Amazon.com you can see clearly that I’m not the only fan of this awesome protein. This stuff is thicker, so make sure you mix it with plenty of water. It tastes fantastic once you get the dilution ratios perfect. If I could only take two supplements, it would be ON’s whey gold standard and the ON Casein protein. Luckily I don’t have to make that designation and I can recommend you ON’s creatine product next.
Not only is casein great for “slow digestion” protein that your body can easily assimilate overnight (it can take upwards of six to seven hours to digest), it also has the fantastic properties of being anti-catabolic and has a high content of amino acids. This is as opposed to the Gold Standard whey, mentioned on the previous page, which is immediately available and should be used earlier in the day.
If your body doesn’t have the right nutrients after a workout, it will enter a catabolic state. In other words, all of the nutrients that were depleted because of your workout need to come from somewhere, which is your muscle mass. This is exactly what we don’t want happening, because it is detrimental to the goal of all bodybuilders, to build lean mass.
This is most severe at night, when your body enters a fast (which is broken by breakfast). The slow release of casein helps keep you nourished at night.
Finally, there is an abundance of amino acids in casein. Amino acids help your body recover from a difficult workout. It also provides a high density of BCAA (branched chain amino acids). These help repair an restore muscle tissues.
The next page reveals my last recommendation for bodybuilding supplements I can’t go without. This list represents the bread-n-butter supps of all bodybuilding enthusiasts.
