Casein is the absolute best nighttime protein you can buy. It releases itself into your bloodstream slowly so your body soaks it up overnight while you sleep. Not only is casein great for “slow digestion” protein that your body can easily assimilate overnight (it can take upwards of six to seven hours to digest), it also has the fantastic properties of being anti-catabolic and has a high content of amino acids. This is as opposed to the Gold Standard whey, mentioned on the previous page, which is immediately available and should be used earlier in the day.

If your body doesn’t have the right nutrients after a workout, it will enter a catabolic state.
